According to the
captain, although this is the second of six calls to the
island, the passengers and crew have already fallen in
love with the island and will continue to make
provisions to increase their calls in the future.
The ship, which measures 279 meters in length and has a
gross tonnage of 78,340, brought some 2,500 passengers
to the Dominican shores on Wednesday.
A brief ceremony was held aboard the ship with
government officials, tourism stakeholders and
representative from Discover Dominica Authority and the
Dominica Air and Sea Ports Authority.
Cruise tourism is a major component of Dominicaʼs
growing tourism sector. A total of 366,692 cruise
passengers (233 cruise ship calls) visited Dominica
during the 2007/2008 cruise ship season.
Approximately 311 cruise ships are expected to call at
Dominica during the 2008/2009 season, bringing nearly
500,601 visitors to the island.
The MV Vision of the Seas was the ninth inaugural call
for the 2008/2009 season with one more expected. |
